Ice Hockey Sticks - Wood
vs Synthetic
To many hockey players, their ice hockey stick is nothing
to be parted with.
I n fact, many players have
a genuine choice of one over the other for different and very personal reasons.
The stick you choose should fit well with you, your level of play, your style of
play, and be of a personal choices all the way around.
There are many different types of hockey sticks; however, in
this article we will discuss the differences between a wood hockey stick and a
synthetic hockey stick. Each are vastly different in regards to price,
materials, and weight.
A wooden stick, which has been in existence since the very
first hockey game, is still a very popular choice for many players. Many players
love the handling and feel of a wooden stick. In fact, players even comment that
a wooden stick provides a better handling when it comes to actual play than a
synthetic stick might. Though this type of stick may slow down a shot slightly,
it will provide better control, handling, and feel altogether.
On the other hand, while wood sticks are great for play,
they lack in durability. Wooden hockey sticks have a greater chance of breaking
during play and wearing out more quickly than its counter part. In fact, in some
sticks, they will wear out in one single game, which will be the cause for
buying a new stick. This could get extremely expensive for the frequent hockey
player.
Overall, wood hockey sticks are cheaper and excellent for
beginners to the game of hockey.
Synthetic hockey sticks are generally much more expensive
thanks to the technology that goes into them now days. However, they possess
more durability and speed than their wood counterparts. To some players,
especially those who are interested more in the speed of their shot than
handling, a synthetic hockey stick is the way to go.
They do not wear out anywhere near as quickly and has a
better flex in the shaft than wood sticks do. They are expensive and generally
not recommended for beginners to the game of hockey. You are looking at a cost
starting out at about $100 and only going up from there for a synthetic hockey
stick.
Again, the choice is yours. You have to get a feel for each
type of stick, take your level of play, position, and strength into
consideration when choosing either type of stick. Find a stick that feels
comfortable for you and strengthens your playing ability.
